Princess Marie, in her capacity as patron of Denmark's AIDS Fund, was present at an event Friday, 1 June, to celebrate champions who have given their support to fighting this dreadful disease. First among equals is Ida Davidsen, the famous "Smørrebrød Queen" and owner of Restaurant Ida Davidsen, who received the Fund's annual prize. Ida's son Oscar is best friends with Prince Joachim and his wife Britt is Marie's Lady-in-Waiting and godmother to lille prins Henrik.
Ida's family were restauranteurs, her father owned a famous bistro in Tivoli Gardens, and son Oscar along with his sister Mia, have taken over the day-to-day management of Ida's eponymous restaurant on the central Copenhagen pedestrian street Strøget. Ida is a major figure in putting Denmark and Danish food on the map long before Noma and the country's recent foodie scene would have you believe. That she finds the time to give to such powerful causes would be in line with such a legacy and an embodiment of a modern-day noblesse oblige that is all too rare in public figures. Brava, Ida!
